If you’re searching for the perfect backdrop for your family, maternity, couples or senior photo session on the South Shore of Massachusetts, you're in the right place.
As a lifestyle photographer, I believe location should do more than look pretty — it should help you feel at ease, reflect your story, and make space for real connection. The following spots are my go-to recommendations, and I’m sharing exactly why I love each one (or why it may not work for you) so you can choose what’s best for your session.
Let’s dive into my favorite local locations for unforgettable photos.

Best Locations for a family or senior photo session on the south shore

1. Rexhame Beach; Marshfield, MA
This wide, windswept beach is pure magic at golden hour. With soft dunes (we can’t go on top of them due to protections), sea grass, and stunning sunsets, Rexhame Beach offers both drama and calm which is a perfect setting for playful family candids or a timeless senior portrait.
- Good to know: There are two sides to this beach- the river side and the beach side. The river side has greenery and dunes. The beach side is just pure beach with some dunes in the back (see below for examples).
💡 *Best for*: Barefoot family snuggles, giggles in the tide, and that golden coastal glow.
📍 Tip: Weekday evenings are ideal for potentially fewer crowds and soft light. It can get very busy here in summer and fall months because it's such a popular spot for photographers all around!

2. Duxbury Beach; Duxbury, MA
Duxbury Beach is a classic for a reason. With it’s trademark long wooden Powder Point Bridge, a sandy shoreline that stretches forever, this location offers so much variety in a single session.
💡 Best for: Coastal-loving seniors, sibling laughter in the sand, or maternity moments with a breeze.
✔️ Good to know: the tide will play a part. High tide is not ideal but low to mid tide can give many different looks.

3. Duxbury Bayside; Duxbury, MA
If you want something a little more serene and sheltered than the open ocean, Duxbury Beach on the bayside is your spot. The water is often still, reflecting the sky and creating a peaceful, minimalist backdrop.
💡 Best for: Intimate maternity sessions, toddler-focused family moments, or a quiet senior session.
🌿 Pro tip: Head over to Blakeman's for dinner and a cold drink after your session.
✔️ Good to know: The sun here can be very bright initially because there is nothing to block it, but the sunsets are worth the wait. Sometimes there are people set up with their beach chairs who come for a quiet sunset so I try to be respectful to them. Also let’s keep tabs on the tide on your date. In my opinion mid-tide is best for this location.

4. Herring Run Park; Pembroke, MA
For a wooded, seasonal feel, Herring Run Park offers a small river, wooden bridges, and (potentially) colorful foliage in the fall. It’s also usually pretty quiet here!
💡 Best for: Leaf-throwing families, cozy fall vibes, or seniors who want a mix of woods and water. Also good for kids with sensory needs as it's not usually busy.
🍂 Ideal in: Mid-October when the leaves are peak color and the light is soft all day long.
✔️ Good to know: I can do earlier evening sessions due to the tree shade here.

5. Bay Farm Fields; Duxbury/Kingston, MA Line
Bay Farm is one of those gems that feels like your own private meadow. Rolling fields, coastal views, and seasonal wildflowers give this spot a magical, natural vibe. Early morning sunset sessions are an option here too.
💡 Best for: Families with young children who love to run, spin, and explore. This is a place for motion and freedom.
🌼 Tip: In late June, the fields are sprinkled with wildflowers.
✔️ Good to know: We can stay in the fields or walk down to the water. It’s good to check the tide here too. I prefer if it’s not low tide. If we go near the large boulders, take caution with your children.

Unconventional Locations:
6. On the Water, in your Boat– Duxbury, Kingston, Plymouth, Scituate, Marshfield, Cohasset, MA (Boat Sessions)
There is something incredibly special about being photographed on the water. Whether it’s your family boat, a sailboat, or a quiet ride through the bay, boat sessions create images that feel nostalgic, effortless, and deeply personal.
These sessions are perfect for families whose happiest memories happen on the water. Think: fishing, cruising, laughing, and watching the sun dip low on the horizon.
🚤 Best for: Families, seniors, or couples sessions and for those who love relaxed, candid moments. Also good for convincing your husband to finally take family photos! LOL
📝 Good to know: Boat photo sessions are weather and wind dependent so flexibility is key. These sessions are scheduled approx 1.5hr before sunset and I only do a few each summer month.

7. Your Own Backyard, Somewhere on the South Shore MA
If you have a gorgeous backyard space, this could work! Don’t underestimate the beauty and intimacy of photographing your family right where your memories are made. Backyard sessions are deeply personal, incredibly convenient, and full of charm — especially for families with young children or pets.
Best for: families with young kids, people who have traditions in your backyard space (games, pizza nights like family below, firepit hangouts, etc), people with pets who prefer to be unleashed or may not be best in a public field or beach. Great for storytelling moments like gardening, snuggles on a porch swing, chalk art, or backyard play (more lifestyle images than posed). If you have the beach down the road from you or have a friend or family member with an amazing yard space/land.
Good to know: best if you have a woodsy yard with some sunlight. I’ll ask for a video and some photos from you to determine if it could work. You’ll need to be ok with items in the background such as grills, yard piles, neighbors yards, fences, etc.
