When most people think of maternity photos, they imagine sun-drenched outdoor sessions at golden hour—flowy dresses, open fields, and glowing light. And don’t get me wrong, those are beautiful.

But living here on the South Shore of Massachusetts or anywhere in New England, an outdoor session in the dead of winter is not always ideal. If you're anything like me and despise the cold, an indoor session is your answer! In fact, I’ve found that maternity sessions, along with newborn sessions, captured in your home often end up being some of the most meaningful images my clients ever do.

The Benefits of an Indoor Maternity Photoshoot

1. It’s Cozy and Comfortable (No Cold Weather Required!)

Here on the South Shore, Cape Cod and Boston winter/spring/fall seasons can be chilly, windy, unpredictable. Indoor maternity sessions allow you to relax in the comfort of your own home or a cozy indoor location, no coat or boots required. If it's chilly you'll want to bundle up- and if you do, it could hide your bump you want to highlight in photos.

Whether you're curled up with your partner, sipping tea, or reading a baby book, these photos feel real and effortless—because they are.

2. More Meaningful and Story-Driven

Your home is where your story is unfolding. By choosing an in-home maternity session, you’re not just posing for photos—you’re documenting your life as it really is. These images often capture the quiet anticipation before baby arrives, full of emotion and personality.

Ideas we can include in your session:

  • Snuggling on the couch under a favorite blanket
  • Sharing coffee or tea in your kitchen
  • Journaling or reading to your baby bump
  • Including your pet in the session
  • Sitting peacefully in your nursery

These kinds of moments tell a deeper story—one you’ll be so glad you captured.

3. You Don’t Need a Magazine-Worthy Home

Worried that your home isn’t “photo-ready”? You’re not alone—and I promise, it doesn’t need to be perfect. With the right light and a few thoughtful angles, we can create beautiful, professional maternity photos that reflect your real life and the love already growing inside your home. It will make your maternity photos super unique.

Already Booking a Newborn Session? A Maternity Session Is the Perfect Add-On

Many of my clients who book newborn sessions choose to add on a mini maternity session, and winter is the perfect time to do it.

Here’s why it matters:

  • You’ll be able to look back on the full journey—before and after baby.
  • Your baby will one day see photos of what life looked like while they were growing.
  • These sessions are relaxed, meaningful, and easy to add to your newborn package.

With the shorter days and colder temperatures, many expecting moms worry that now isn’t the “right time” for photos. But winter actually creates the perfect setting for an indoor maternity shoot—there’s something beautiful about the stillness of this season that mirrors the waiting and wonder of pregnancy.
